Frye / Wiles Blog Archive for the ‘Design’ Category
We talk a lot about our web work on here, so I thought it would be nice to stop and recognize the work of some of the wonderful logo designers we have working with us.
These four, by Martha Ormiston, with her comments inline:

“The EZ Student Life logo is classically collegiate, represented by the graduation cap and also the font which is a throwback to old varsity jackets. The blue and orange colors used in the logo are complementary and make the logo stand out, while also creating an aesthetically pleasing feeling in the viewer. ”

“The logo for MM Real Estate is inspired from lion door knockers. The lion head conveys reliability and strength, and the lion being part of a door knocker expresses a welcoming feeling. The font is reminiscent of text found on old roman sculptures, thus conveying dedication and dependability.”

“The logo for Devin K. Binder, M.D, Ph.D., is a modern rendition of a brain and spine using geometric shapes and negative space. The scrub blue color is used to convey professional medical branding by referencing the blue scrub uniforms worn in the operating room.”

“The Gold Sparrow logo is a minimalistic representation of a Sudan Golden Sparrow using the colors gold and brown. The serif font conveys traditional and classic, while the use of all capitals makes the company name both attention grabbing and bold. ”
And a couple from Dani Cabrera:

We’ve been a bit quiet on our blog recently, but we’re still here - just working on some longer-term projects. Hopefully we’ll get more blog-active pretty soon, but work comes first!
Anyway, I thought I would share one of the things we are working on - the 2011 Los Angeles Film Festival. As some of you know, we started working with Film Independent, the parent company of the LA Film Fest, last year on the 2010 Film Fest website. That worked out well, and we’ve been doing lots of little projects for them in the meantime, including web support for many major events such as the 2011 Spirit Awards.
Since we have a good handle on the Film Festival part of the business, we were asked once again to handle the web presence for the event for 2011. Film festival websites are interesting projects, because they are quite transient and impermanent. They generally go through multiple phases aimed at totally separate audiences (sponsors, members, general public, and then time-of-event news reporting and sales). And then, as quickly as they show up, they become mostly irrelevant shortly after the festival is over. All this makes for interesting work! Anyway, here’s an early phase of the site - the micro-site to support pass sales. Check it out (and all future phases) at http://www.lafilmfest.com We’ll update as new phases go up!

We are very pleased to announce that the re-designed website for the Urology Center of Southern California has been launched. The UCOSC has several locations all over Southern California, providing comprehensive and innovative urological services for their patients. Check out their brand new website here.
AKA: Why your image carousel pulling content from posts or pages in Wordpress is not working
We recently ran into a fairly frustrating little issue on a site we were working on. This particular site had a jQuery Cycle gallery on the home page, and it was pulling images from individual pages in Wordpress using query_posts(). Problem was, images in IE would appear and then disappear. This was happening in all versions of Internet Explorer.

Every once in a while, there are breakthroughs that are revolutionary in their simplicity and focus. Twitter is an example that comes to mind. For me and in my work, Balsamiq Mockups is just such a breakthrough.
In the world of User Experience Design, there has been some really interesting research and publication on the importance and immense value of sketching in the web and application design process (for more on this, I recommend Bill Buxton’s life-changing book Sketching User Experiences). People, it seems, have a different psychological reaction to sketches during the concept development and experience design process. When something seems quick and rough, people collaborate and think. When presented with ideas that are too fully formed, people will approach them as being complete ideas, and as such will make black or white decisions about them.

Just saw this on Adobe’s website:
http://labs.adobe.com/technologies/flashcs5/appsfor_iphone/
This is potentially a game-changer, and we’re really excited! This does not mean that iPhone has started supporting Flash player, but instead that Actionscript applications will compile down to native iPhone apps.
What this means, among other things, is that Frye / Wiles will soon start offering iPhone Application Development as part of our suite of services. If you are interested, please give us a call!

A few days ago Smashing Magazine released 50 High-Quality Icon sets, and they’re glorious indeed. I don’t know why, but I just like combing through the endless icons to see what innovative ways designers are creating these nifty, unique, shiny, candy like icons. There’s definitely a wide range of icons from a Nintendo icon set to my favorite topic, food. So have fun and remember to view the terms of services before using these sweet, sweet icons.

The reoccurring themes this time around are vivid spectrum palettes, ribbon-like elements against sharp angles, solid blacks, and wide open headers. The first two in the trio come from the CSS Heaven gallery, while the third is a personal favorite. At first glace the Racero portfolio reminded me of Web Designer Wall’s Photo Strip tutorial (if you haven’t seen it yet by all means DO). The high contrast ribbon-like texture writhing through the design - - even the little sheen and its soft bends all mirror similar concepts that can be achieve with a few tweaks of the relatively new Photoshop Transform/Warp tool. There’s something about (more…)
