Frye / Wiles Blog Archive for the ‘Press Release’ Category

Now, don’t get me wrong: I love corporate work. It is challenging, reliable, profitable and it’s nice dealing with companies who have things like, you know, accounting departments. However, every once it a while, it’s nice to work on a project that’s a little more fun.
The BellRays website was just that kind of project. For those of you unfamiliar with The BellRays, they are a world-famous punk/blues band headed up by the very cool Bob and Lisa Vennum. They needed a website that would make it easy to keep up with their fans, so in between European tours over the last few months, we’ve had the pleasure of working with Bob and Lisa on this cool new content managed website and web store.
Among other things, the new site gives them the ability to keep their gig calendar up to date, sell swag, offer a few mp3s for download, showcase their lyrics, and in general offer a lot of information about their long history and prolific catalog.
Anyway, check out the new Bell Rays site today! Enjoy!

When we get a chance, we here at Frye / Wiles like to help our our local non-profits and community organizations. Not only does this make us feel fuzzy, but it is actually pretty good for business - a lot of my best networking opportunities come from in-kind donations to non-profits.
A lot of you know we handle the website for the Riverside Art Museum, and that we do the the print design and branding for Inland Agency’s Shop to Stop Breast Cancer annual event, and that we do the website for the I Survived Real Estate annual event (which is actually another breast cancer fundraiser - my family has lost women to breast cancer, so I try to do what I can to help).
Anyway, in between all that and, you know, making money, we recently managed to squeeze in a partial donation to a local Riverside neighborhood community organization called DANA (Downtown Area Neighborhood Alliance). DANA needed a way to keep members and the public in the loop and help organize events and meetings. After seeing the work we did for the Pick Group: Riverside Young Professionals, they asked us to build their site. And that we did! Click here to see the new DANA Riverside website. Enjoy!

We’ve been pretty busy over here lately, and a lot of new sites have launched. One that we are proud of is OctoClean.com
OctoClean is a franchising company - they enable people to become business owners by selling everything you need to start regional or local Janitorial and Cleaning company.
The OctoClean site (along with almost all the sites we do nowadays) needed to be maintainable by the client - their industry moves too fast to have to worry about having an outside company in the loop for adding new website content. Because of this, we set up their site using a really slick Content Management system, as well as an industry news blog that allows them to keep their franchise owners in the loop.
The OctoClean project has been very rewarding - they are an innovative, award-winning company, and we’re glad to see good brands coming out of the Inland Empire. Check out OctoClean’s new website today!
One of the more frustrating parts of web development is waiting for DNS propagation - in other words, if you change which server a domain name points to, it takes a while for that information to filter through the interwebs (different Internet Service Providers have their own DNS caches, and it takes a while for them to reset). The result of this is that some people may be seeing the old server while others see the new one. This process can take up to 72 hours. As a developer, there is very little you can do about DNS propagation - it’s out of your hands (although try explaining that to a client….).
Propagation is only one part of the equation, however. Chances are pretty good that, beyond the DNS flushing that needs to happen on the part of your ISP, you also will have an IP cache issue going on with your local machine, at least if you develop on Mac OSX like we do. While you can’t control the length of time it takes your ISP to clear out their cache, you can at the very least make sure that when the propagation happens, you are the first to see it. In Mac OS X, the way you do this is to clear your machine’s IP cache, and clearing your browser cache. This is a pretty simple process, but it involves the big bad Terminal.
- Open the Terminal application
- Enter the following text after yourname$
- OSX 10.5 Leopard and Above, enter:
dscacheutil -flushcache
- OSX 10.4 and Below, enter:
lookupd -flushcache
- Hit Return
- Relaunch your web browser, clear your browser cache (if you’re using Firefox, I highly recommend the Cache Status plugin: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/1881)
- Reload the site you are trying to see
If propagation has happened at your ISP level, you should now be able to see the site living on the new server.

It’s been pretty busy over here at Frye / Wiles, and I just realized that I’ve got a backlog of client sites that we’ve recently launched. I usually like to announce the new sites as we launch them, because we don’t always have time to keep our Portfolio section completely up to date (darn pesky client work!).
Anyway, we’re proud to announce the launch of Angie’s World, a fairly in-depth site for one of Riverside’s premiere personal training and nutrition companies. Angie’s World is run by the one-of-a-kind Angie Lustrick, and we worked hard to reflect her unique personality in the layout and design of the site.
In addition, this site is completely content-managed, so the non-web-designer folks at Angie’s World are able to add new content as they see fit. Complete Content Managment is one of the big things in the web design world these days, and we at Frye / Wiles are all for it - We love to see our clients become intimately involved with their websites, and keep them constantly changing and growing.
Anyway, check out Angie’s World here. Enjoy!

Continuing to catch up on site launch announcements, we’re happy to announce the launch of John Pinson Photography. John needed a simple, flexible way to display and sell his great outdoors photography, as well as keep connected with his customers and fans. This fully content-managed site allows him to keep the content up to date on his own, while still managing to look and function great! Check out John Pinson Photography here!

We’re launching new sites like mad over here at Frye / Wiles! We’re happy to announce the launch of the beautiful new Mardon Jewelers website. Mardon is something of an establishment here in Riverside, and we’re honored to have the opportunity to work closely with them on the redesign and rebranding of their web presence.
Visit the new Mardon Jewelers website!

The web design business is a strange one - you get the chance to interact with a lot of interesting businesses and industries, including some whom you’d never think would be interested in a web presence. Of course, a good web presence can benefit almost any innovative business and Attic Mini Storage is no different. Because of a combination of foresight and trust on the part of the business’s ownership and a little creativity on our part, what could have been a fairly boring job to work for turned out rather enjoyable and rewarding. Check out the new Attic Mini Storage site today!

Frye / Wiles is proud to announce the launch of the new PRVCY Premium site!
PRVCY Premium is a new high-end line of jeans from Privacy Wear. Due to the premium nature of this site, they decided they wanted to go with a Full Browser Flash site. This is a pretty common decision with upper-eschelon product marketing: this kind of product doesn’t really build much steam from SEO, which is traditionally the primary argument against Flash sites.
Check out the live PRVCY Premium site here.
We’ve been going through some changes over here at Frye / Wiles recently - refocusing on our core businesses, trimming the fat, etc. As part of our reorganization, we decided it was time to redo the ever-changing staff section, so without further ado, enjoy!
