As has been widely reported in the news media today, a very major security flaw has been discovered in Microsoft’s Internet Explorer browser.  The flaw has only been observed in Internet Explorer 7, but Microsoft has stated that it is theoretically present in all versions of their browser from IE 5 to IE 8.   This flaw could allow malicious people to steal your passwords.

At the moment, Frye / Wiles is recommending the following action to all its Windows-based clients:

  • Switch Browsers Immediately:  We recommend Mozilla Firefox
  • Update Windows in a few days - Microsoft has acknowledged the flaw and is working on an update.  This update will probably be released through the Windows Update utility (it’s a good idea to keep up to date on your updates anyway).
  • Be careful: So far the exploit has recognized on about 10,000 sites.  If you are entering password information, I would be very hesitant to do it in IE, at least until the fix is made available.

This is a very serious issue.  Please be cautious.
