Citibank has downtime

Downtime happens.  That is a fact in all things web-based.  Sadly, we sometimes have to take our websites or at least sections of a site off line to do some maintenance or upgrading. What’s most important is that you pick the best time for such downtime.

Citibank needs to take its site down, or at least sections of it. So, why am I so upset with them for having there site down?

CHECK THE SITE NOW!

Apparently, Citibank likes to send out their “hey, pay your bill!” emails at midnight.  This makes sense, new date and a new “your now x days late”.  What;s the problem?   I get a new email, head over to the website linked in the email, and the site is down.

Looks like someone didn’t think about the overlap of time tables.  The biggest issue here is not just that I went to the website and couldn’t pay my bill. The issue is that these two tasks are handled by different departments and they were not communicating.

At a firm like Frye / Wiles, I don’t have to worry as much about staying in sync with the rest of the company as we are a small firm. However, at many large firms or organizations its easy to have scheduling conflicts.

It is important to make sure that you stay connected with everyone else in your company for this sort of thing, but it’s not just downtime that can be an issue. Many large companies have multiple SEOs. If you are bidding on keywords for a PPC campaign, then you want to make sure that someone else in your organization is not bidding you up.  In the same sense, if you are making good headway on a keyword organic return, then you should leverage the power you have to move your organization forward.

The most important thing is that you stay connected to the people on your team. That way you don’t do something dumb like eblast someone to a dead sie.
